Diamond has only one kind of carbon element, so its structural particle is only a carbon atom, because each carbon atom is covalently bonded with the other four carbon atoms around it. From a lattice cell (cell), all carbon atoms are arranged at the top corner and center of a regular tetrahedron, so the diamond structure is a typical covalent bond crystal, and it is also a typical atomic crystal. According to the structural laws, there are two possibilities of cubic crystal system and hexagonal crystal system. Therefore, there are two different crystal systems in the diamond structure. They are called cubic diamond and hexagonal diamond respectively. Their crystal cells are different. The former is cubic crystal. Cell, the latter is a hexahedral unit cell, but all are covalent bonds.

Diamond has the highest hardness, about 90GPa; the highest Young's modulus is about 1100GPa, Al2O3 is 500GPa; the highest thermal conductivity, the thermal conductivity of Type IIa natural diamond is 20W/cmK (at 298K); the highest Molar hardness, 0.293 gram atoms/cm3; widest waveband; fastest sound velocity, approximately 18.2 km/s, Al2O3 approximately 11.6 km/s; highest wear resistance, tens times higher than ceramic materials and many more.
